According to a recently released summary of the research, there is a 66% chance that WITHOUT SURGERY your disc herniation will resolve.

Researchers looked at all the studies on this between 1990-2015. Different studies reported differing levels of resolution, with one saying up to 82% of people in their group got better with treatment and exercise and rest; no need for surgery!

We’ve certainly seen surgeons attitudes towards alternatives like seeing another health practitioner, doing back exercises, and keeping active, change over the last few years. It used to be a given that if you had a scan of your back and it showed a disc herniation, that you would have surgery recommended for you. Increasingly we have patients come in telling me that their surgeon saw a disc herniation on their scan and told them NOT to have surgery but instead to come and get treatment.

So bear this in mind if you or someone you know has a disc herniation. There are many factors to be considered but it’s good to know that without surgery, across 25 years of research, it has been found that two out of every three people get better without the need for surgery. Each person, condition and injury is unique, so osteopathic treatments and interventions will vary from person to person.

Our Bondi Junction services combine exercise prescription, movement and lifestyle advice, dry needing and hands-on treatment. Hands-on treatments can include massage, stretching, repetitive movements, mobilisation and/or manipulation.

If your injuries require hands-on treatment of painful and tender areas, your osteopath will inform you.

Your osteopath may also provide education and advice to help you manage your condition between appointments. This may include giving you exercises to do at home or at work.
